A dusty burning smell the first cold day is normal. Electrical, gas and exhaust smells are not. How to tell the difference.

A dusty burningsmell the first time you turn on the heat is normal and should fade within anhour. A smell like hot plastic, rotten eggs, or car exhaust is not normal. Hereis how to tell which one you have and what to do about it.
Your heatingsystem sat all summer while the AC ran. Dust settled on the burners, the heatexchanger, or the electric heat strips. The first heating cycle burns it off.Open a window, let the system run, and the smell should clear within an hour.
If it lastslonger than that, or comes back every time the heat runs, check the filterfirst. If the filter is clean, have the system looked at.
This smellssharp and chemical, not dusty. The usual causes are a blower motor running hot,a failing capacitor, a loose wire, or an overheated connection on the heatstrips. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call. Do not keep running itto see if the smell goes away.
Natural gas hasno smell on its own. Utilities add a sulfur odor so you notice a leak. If yousmell rotten eggs, do not flip switches or adjust the thermostat. Get everyoneout, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Once the utility clearsthe home, call us to check the furnace.
A gas furnacesends its exhaust outside through a vent pipe. If you smell exhaust inside, that venting may be blocked or leaking. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so theexhaust odor is your warning. Turn the furnace off. If a carbon monoxide alarmsounds, leave the home and call 911.
If your homehas gas appliances, keep a carbon monoxide alarm on every level and outsideeach sleeping area.
Not a burningsmell, but a common one here. Houston humidity leaves moisture in the drainpan, on the indoor coil, and in attic ductwork. When the heat kicks on, itmoves that air through the home. It is not an emergency, but it is worth a lookbefore it becomes mold.
Is it safe to sleep with the heat on if it smells likeburning? If it is the dusty first-run smell and it is fading, yes.If it smells electrical, like gas, or like exhaust, no. Turn it off and call.
Why does my heat pump smell like burning? Heatpumps use electric heat strips for backup. Those strips collect dust over thesummer and burn it off the same way a furnace does.
Does maintenance stop the first-run smell? Itcuts it down. Maintenance is $109 for the first system and $59 for eachadditional system.
